    A synonym for "at least"

While editing, I keep on stumbling with "at least" all over my manuscript, but I can't find a replacement or another way to put it. ¿Is there another word or word combination that means the same?

Re: A synonym for "at least"

Use it in context, please. Do you mean:

    1) At least I could depend on Bob being on time. He always is.

    OR

    2) The volume of the barrel must be at least 50 gallons.

If 1), then try "At a minimum" or "Thankfully" (but use either sparingly. Try to eliminate the ones you can.)

If 2), then try "the smallest amount" or "less than"

    Hope that helps!

Try "it had to of been...". I find that it adds more emphasis than "at least"

    Hope this helps!

Malena, it's hard to make suggestions for substitutions without knowing the context. Sometimes, the best solution is to rearrange the sentence so that it doesn't require a substitution.

And Michael, although it's awkward, the correct expression is: "It had to have been..." You may hear "of" in speech, but the real word is "have."

Yes, it's hard to make a decision without knowing the context. However, I'd say the sentence aloud without the "at least," and see if it stands alone. It might be one of those writer's demons you have. I find "simply," and "whispering," to be two of mine.

Thanks I didn't put the context because there are so many examples. Here are some:
At least, he was still alive
The photograph will not grace Rafe's desk, at least not in his office.

    At least, Tizzy never pretended
If at least Dalila was around
At least, I know I shall live to an old age

Okay, in context: I'd take them all out. They don't add clarity to the sentences. It's a habit. Watch out for it throughout the novel.

I agree with Irese. They probably don't need to be there. I MIGHT leave the one, "At least, I know I shall live to an old age." but the others can be removed.
