    Capitalization again. Bong!

    I know, it's been asked a hundred times. But once more, if you please...

    Is this correct?

    She looked at Sheriff Unger and shuddered.
    They begged the sheriff for mercy.

    As a title, it's capitalized, otherwise not.

    My guess is yes because it's a specific name in the first sentence. (Let me check with my brother in law, he's an undersheriff.)

    every 2 out 3 listings that specifically listed a last name had the word Sheriff capped.

    Yes, you have it!

    Personal titles are capitalized only if they precede the name and are not separated by a comma.
