    Help!

Which is correct? " ... submitted an essay in a contest," or " ... submitted an essay to a contest."?

    Thanks!

    Re: Help!

"essay to" would be the politically correct term.

    Re: Help!

Reading the tea leaves at the bottom of my martini glass, I come up with entered in or submitted to. The definition of submit according to my cigar wrapper is to present for consideration, so I think it would be 'to.' But what do I know?

Try Blueberry Tea in a brandy snifter. Bigger glass, more tea leaves and definitely more of the benefits.

    For posters

Thanks for your posts. My question was designed to see who was awake with both creative hands on the keyboard.

Mary, since one 'enters' a contest, it suggests the act of putting something 'into'. Your call. Helene

I would say that you submitted an essay 'to' a contest, because you did so from an external standpoint. If you actually performed the act whilst competing, then it would be 'in'.
