    Question RE: referral from editor

An editor at a well-known imprint recently rejected my manuscript, but gave me a referral to an editor at a different publishing house.

Is it appropriate to send a thank you note to Editor A?

Obviously I will mentioned Editor A's referral in my cover letter to Editor B. But will Editor A have mentioned something to Editor B in passing, or should I assume that my cover letter will be the first that Editor B has ever heard of me?

    Thanks in advance!

    Absolutely send a thank you.

I would assume that Agent B has never heard about you. It is possible that it was mentioned, but they might need something to trigger their memory.

Absolutely! A nice bagel tray for his/her office one morning wouldn't hurt, either. Referrals are gold in this business, and you'll want to leave a good taste in this ed's mouth for when you submit your next ms.

I agree. It's a big deal to get a referral and a simple courteous thank you seems appropriate.

Thank you kindly, all of you!

A thank you note has been sent. Funny the simple things that sometimes just fly right by. I'm ever so grateful for your advice.

Thank you, Mya. I am preparing my submission materials today; the requirements are slightly different than the first editor's (of course!).

I know it's not a shoe-in, but it's probably the most encouraging response I've yet gotten. I'll be sure to update!

Good deal, AW! And yes, saying thank you is almost always appropriate; I'm sure you made the right choice.
