Help! A publisher wants to see my work. Now What?

Author: Vaughan Vandenberg

Good people, I've had the good fortune to find a publisher who has asked to see my product.

It's a non-fiction 53,000 word how-to manual that I've been selling via my website for 3 years now. Armed with sales figures and demographics I've been beating down doors. My action has lead to this initial result.

It's a small to medium-sized publisher based in Oxford, England. I'm just outside London.

The thing is that 80% of my sales (online) go to North Americans. I'm concerned that this might be a publisher capable of getting my product on the shelves across America. Time will will tell on that score.

At this point I find myself totally unprepared for what to do next. What do I look out for? What should I submit and commit to for the time being? Do I send them my product willy-nilly (they could just buy it off my website) or do I resort to legal defences, etc and prepare for battle?

What do you advise?

Your time and insights will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Vaughan

I don't fully understand your question. Nevertheless, I'll give you my opinion. If your self-published book has been selling successfully, the publisher may want to publish it.

Have you researched this publisher, so that you know they aren't some kind of scam? If it is a scam, don't give them the time of day. If it is legitimate, think about sending them.

Obviously, they can't have first rites (or can they?) because you published it first via your website.

I guess you would send your product as if you were just trying to get it published. Of course, you will bundle a blurb about how they have 'previously asked to see the product', but willy nilly=not professional.

Meanwhile, I'm such a band nerd.

I saw 'Regards Vaughan' and thought 'Ralph Vaughan Williams'.
