synopsis

Is it acceptable to divide your synopsis into chapters? Like: Chapter 1:
.......................... etc
Chapter 2:
.......................... etc

or do agent want it all in one stream? I'm asking because it would be a lot easier to follow if my synopsis was like this.

Rich,

No chapter breaks in the synopsis. Try this site for examples and resources on the synopsis:

It's for romance novels, but the same rules apply. And there are some fabulous links on there with posted synopses from published novels.

Hope that helps.

Hi Rich,
I don't know much about agents; I haven't got one, but my publisher required me to send a chapter synopsis for each of my books in the form of a couple of paragraphs for each chapter. The chapter synopsis became a useful tool for interviews and press releases. It also helped with the blurb; that very important 300 words or so on the back cover. Synopsis are a bone of contention with many writers and there are many people out there giving advice and guidance, good for them, but I found a chapter synopsis helped me so do one anyway.
Good luck, Chancer.

Christopher:

Beg to differ. Your work is nonfiction. For fiction, I would follow Jeanne's advice.

Hi jayce,
fair comment, but by doing a chapter synopsis he's giving himself a tool to work with and it can only help him. Incidentally, I got the impression that this may be a trend with some publishers... who knows?
(Good thread though, eh?)
Regards, Chancer.
