What about real places or things in your ms? |

I am going to try and get representation for the novel I have just finished. I'm curious what the deal is if in the novel there are songs mentioned or real places mentioned. For example, a lot of what goes on is at my old high school. Real place, fake events. Also, there is a lot of songs mentioned in the story that contribute to what's going on at the time the characters may be hearing them or dancing to them at a wedding etc. What is the deal with putting the names of real songs into a novel? Is it "allowed"?

Yes, you can name them but quoting lyrics will require permi$$ion.
Good luck.

It's allowed, but I think naming the songs will date your manuscript.

I wouldn't worry about it. And as per naming songs, Poppy Z. Brite's characters in _Lost Souls_ sing "The Piano has been Drinking" and I thought it was hilarious.

Either way, the thing is, the manuscript has just been written and songs that are mentioned in it are songs that range from the 60s to the 90s.

I recently read a manuscript that mentions what songs were playing on the radio or in a dance hall/night club. It was an historical fiction about WWII, and this old girl remembers most of those songs. They worked really well into the story, at least with that author.
