I was sick this past week and spent it reading "Twilight", the first book. I had avoided it at all costs as the subject matter didn't appeal to me at all, but my co-workers are all avid (rabid?) fans and talked me into it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was impressed. I hope my someday novel reads so clearly and compellingly.
Not sure if the movies are something I'll watch, but I'll defintely take the book for a spin.

I've read all four, enjoyed the first two, tolerated the third and almost didn't finish the fourth which really ruined the
whole darn saga for me. I also saw the first movie and will see the second, although not at midnight and not dressed like one of the characters, as many of my friends intend to be. I figure after seeing Twilight, New Moon couldn't get any worse.

I think the entire Twilight series is awful.
I've read and enjoyed some vampire novels and fan fiction. Sometimes they are amazing and very well done, where others it's absolutely awful. I don't think I've ever read one where it's in between, though.
Stephenie Meyer's writing is decent. She could write good things, so I can't say much against it. And she got multiple books published, so there's definitely something there. The plot for all of the Twilight books reminds me of the aforementioned absolutely awful vampire fan fiction, though.
The first book, I guess I could deal with. It's not terrible, even if I didn't think it was very good. After that, the plots just get bad, though. Really bad. Honestly, I feel the ideas and the content and just the entire direction of the story is similar to something an angsty teenage girl with unhealthy obsessions towards vampires would write. The books have sold well, though. I guess there is a large demographic of those types of teenage girls in the world who find the Twilight books interesting.
I'll stick with vampire novels like Let the Right One In by John Lindqvist. Though that book is quite a bit more adult, so comparing it to the Twilight series is unfair in that sense. Still, something like that, but tuned down to a YA audience, is what I personally think vampire novels should aspire to.

I haven't read any of the books, but I have seen the first movie. I'd give it a 6/10, a solid rental, but that's about it. I actually have a burned copy my ex-roommate gave me. Might get around to watching it a second time at some point next year. As for the new movie, I'm in no rush to watch it. It'll end up on TV eventually and I'll end up watching it on some night when nothing else is on. I can only hope with all the hype, it's better than the first one.

"The release of the latest Twilight flick, New Moon, will doubtlessly send gaggles of girls (and grown women) across the world into a blissful tizzy this weekend.
But looking beyond Robert Pattinson’s Byronic good looks and the irresistible allure of immortal love, is there something improper lurking within the Twilight franchise?
A University of Victoria political science professor seems to think so. In her gender and politics class, Janni Aragon explores the negative sexual stereotypes she believes the saga enforces."
