I usually change it up to fit a scene or a chapter.

I second JG. For this last book there was a lot of Celtic music. Feathermerchants ursuline was good for intense scenes.

I tend not to listen to music as I find it distracting. Maybe it would help loosen me up, but unless I was generating a first draft of fiction, that might not be such a good thing.

Music is something I have a tiny bit of natural aptitude for, unlike writing-- maybe it beckons to me a little to seductively. I try to ignore it. Usually I'd rather write.

No music, no television, no lights.
However, I have found that some songs will stimulate me in the direction of a new novel.

well, i like to think big,... since they're going to make a movie of my novel, i have worked on my own 'soundtrack' that inspires me for the 'different scenes' in my book. sometimes i have to focus more, and i turn the music off, but never have all the lights off... my eyes hurt after focusing on a glowing screen in the dark for hours, so if i have more light, well, it's not as bad on my eyes.
