Difference between Frey and Natalie Collins

For those who are still following this, I thought this was an interesting blog entry by published author, Natalie Collins.

Several people mentioned, on the Literary Agents thread, that there's pressure in the book industry to call their loosely autobiographical work a memoir.

Here's what Natalie had to say about her experience with this kind of pressure and what she thinks of it.

Scroll down to the Liars-R-Us entry:

Natalie's words are particularly apropos at this time because someone who alleges to be James Frey's old girlfriend is now coming out and saying the book is true.

She's not saying it's true because the individual events are true. She's saying it's true because he was an addict and now he's not.

Well, I don't remember anyone disputing the fact that Frey was an addict. Some have questioned his level of addiction, but no one has said he didn't stay at Hazelden. The problem with the "girlfriend's" assertions, if indeed it is his girlfriend posting these messages and not some poser, is that she seems to think the fact that he is an addict and recovered is enough to call the book a memoir.

I think Natalie's blog gives some perspective on this.

Natalie Collins maybe honest in this respect, but she's a bitch of a different kind.

Those posts from the "girlfriend" don't pass the sniff test. If she were a real person, all she'd have to do is call a press conference. No need to whine impotently in internet forums.
