Not enough information on your goals. What are your goals for your writing--and for the specific works you want to be printed/published? That helps determine what is an OK route and what isn't.

I've written a 2 part series about mountain biking& cross country running. The 3rd one about rock climbing is half way done. A friend told me lulus a good outfit.

How it's printed isn't that important. To whom/how are you going to sell it? That's the important issue. Lulu will give you a POD book setup. Where are you going from there?

Gary's right. When you self publish, you're on your own regarding marketing. If you can convince an agent there is enough of a market for your book(s) to interest a publisher, and your writing is first rate, that would be the way to go. If, however, there is only a niche market readership, self publishing may be your only option.
Good luck.

Find places that review self-published books. You can locate several on-line. Newspapers will also consider self-published books. One editor told me that he can't know if a new, even self-published book is the first folio of Shakespeare unless he reads it.
