Self Publishing

Author: prince sidhartha

I can see from reading many post on this site that authors who wish to self publish, with a self publishing company need to self publish with a company with integrity. If an author choses to publish with my company, and are not satisfied with the service I provide, I would like for them to post all over the internet that Parallel View Publishing Sucks! It cost $795.00 to publish with my company, but what you get is worth more than the price and services that we provide. I live in New Orleans, and I have been scammed by FEMA, the Red cross, and also Publish America; so I understand all the problems that today's authors face. You can also chose to publish yourself, and I also offer a complete guide for those who wish to do that also. At Barnesandnoble.com the price and title is $17.95 Dollar Cost Self Publishing by Jeremiah Hensley. I hope this is not perceived as spam, but I see no other way of informing other authors of othe options that are out there. www.parallelviewpublishing.com

I meant to say that what you receive for the price that pay is second to none

I meant to say that what you receive for the price that pay is second to none

...that makes no sense... if that's typical of your writing ability, i don't know that i'd recommend you as a publisher, sorry to say...

...and what does an author get from you, for his/her 800 bucks?

Re: Self Publishing

Author: prince sidhartha

You get a lot of services for free that other companies charge for, such as free editing/proofreading, returnable books, a custom book cover, and your title will be entered in Ingram's Advance catalog; a catalog that goes out to book sellers all over the country. We only use the lastet graphic design design software (Adobe Indesign CS3) Sorry about the typo.

Re: Self Publishing

Author: maia -none-

if one is paying nearly 800 bucks for it all, how can any of it be 'free'???... how many copies of the book does the writer get for that fee?

Re: Self Publishing

Author: prince sidhartha

The author receives three free copies, and can also order their own copies by only paying the printing cost. When you look at the prices that other self publishing companies charge for making the author's books returnable (usually $500.00) I still believe that this is a great deal. They also charge for editing and proofreading; and some of their publishing fees are more expensive than mine. I've heard of authors spending up to $1500 just to get their books published by some of these self publishing companies. To tell you the truth maia-none; if no-one purchased our publishing services, I would be happy. I would be happy because I am an author also, and to me there is nothing like writing books and making them come alive. Half of the money that you would spend publishing with us actually goes into making the book more successful

The sad thing is that he's bound to find some takers.

Re: Self Publishing

Author: prince sidhartha

What is so sad about offerring free editing and proofreading. What is so sad about making an author's book returnable; at no additional cost to the author. If this is sad, I wonder what you think about the companies that charge extra for these services?

Re: Self Publishing

From the look of your posts, the author might be better off paying you not to proofread/edit their work.

Re: Self Publishing

Author: Patrick F

Free editing/proofreading? Well you get what you pay for. I wonder how focused and skilled that could be . . . also questions are generally ended with a question mark "?" similar to my first sentence. Though you might need the hint.

Re: Self Publishing

Author: prince sidhartha

I do not edit my post; I just post them. I've read numerous post on this site that were not grammarically correct; and this is a writers forum; isn't it? I even added the question mark this time. Authors do not have to accept changes that are made by an editor. My point is some self publishing companies charge extra for these services. My intention was to help fellow authors, I did not fathom that I would be critized for it. Maybe I should have edited my post; but you know, I not trying to fool anyone or to impress anybody. Publishing books is what I do, and with nine books under my belt under my own company's name, I am very satisfied with what I have accomplished. I was a police officer for fifteen years before I retired. I am the son a Pentecostal Minister and also a gospel singer. I am not a salesman. I probably couldn't sell lemonade at a lemonade stand. I use the internet and Ingram's Advance catalog to market my books. So if I haven't made a good first immpression now you know why; I am just Prince

"I do not edit my post; I just post them."

Re: Self Publishing

Well, see here, there are errors that are easy to make- transposing letters, for example. Leaving a letter off, or when typing fast, putting the space where it isn't supposed to be. And then, there are errors tht no self respecting writer should make.

Making a bunch of stupid looking errors does not make you look good. Perhaps to someone who is not so picky, it will not make you look bad. Desperation is a sad state.

Anyway, good luck to you. I've always had utmost respect for that religion you started.

Re: Self Publishing

I think I don't do business with any "publisher" that expects me to pay for anything at all. My publisher pays me.

Re: Self Publishing

If you are in the publishing business and trying to promote yourself, wouldn't perfect grammar, perfect spelling, perfect punctuation, etc. be the perfect way to promote yourself? You are trying to justify not ensuring these things in your posts because others can be lazy about them.

If I wanted to sell cupcakes, you could be darn sure they they would be piled high with pastel, sugary icing, fresher than anything you've ever tasted and would have one, perfect unblemished cherry sitting right on top.

You shot yourself in the foot.

Re: Self Publishing

Prince, what's this all about?

Avoid stigma of paying a publisher! We want your book, not your money.

And yet you want $800? Sounds pretty "stigma" to me.

Are you the one doing the "free" editing/proofreading or do you have employees on the payroll who are/will be in charge of this?

Do you have any takers yet? (Actually, takers isn't the right word...they'd be givers. Of their hard-earned dough.)

Damn...I was sure I inserted the italics. :-(

Let's try again: Avoid stigma of paying a publisher! We want your book, not your money.

Re: Self Publishing

Sorry prince sidhartha. Nothing personal.

I will never go the self publishing route. I prefer to use the hard way. The only way.

I am still learning the industry, but I will say this---a good agent/publisher pays the writer, not the other way around---as Ce Ce has implied.

I have got to admit I make typo mistakes till they are coming out of my ears (cliche). But, this is only because I am extremely busy during the day time, and I do mean busy. But yet, within myself, I do not find this a good enough excuse. However, you are a publisher. You of all people should be editing your work before placing it into a writers forum.

Also understand that using the self publishing route can be very destructive to an authors career---in the sense that no other agent will touch them with a barge pole if they ever used that route. Even though you may mean well, it can be destructive to wannabe writers like myself.

Sorry, as said before, I'm using the hard way (even if it fails in the end).

My regards

Lewis.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this post. My goal was to present a more cost effective way of not only getting published, but to present a product that would place authors' books on a more even playing field with traditionally published books, by offerring 55% discount to book sellers, by offerring free editing and proofreading; by including a marketing package; by marketing the books along with the authors; instead of leaving to author alone to market for themselves. I posted this message here under "other wasy into print" because I thought this area of posting was for authors who were looking for "other ways to get published." 90% of the money would have gone directly into the production of the book, and marketing. I have just received a reply from a manuscript I sent out in 2005 to a publisher. Since I started my own company in that same year, I published that book myself, and it has become my best seller. You know the drill; the reply from the publisher was a rejection; of course. I finally realized that I could help fellow authors better by presenting; in a book, a cost effective way of getting published; while also keeping all of the royalties. The book is "Dollar Cost Self Publishing for Authors: How to Take Control of your Publishing Destiny" Author: Jeremiah Hensley $17.95

Re: Self Publishing

Author: eilidh gowan

I don't think the market is truly ready for self-publishing. So far I think there is only one example for a self-published books that is officially counted as a best seller. One out of how many thousands? The author in question has invested tons of hours in marketing his book. Are you ready for the effort? Do self-publishers understand what it takes to market a product? Nothing comes from nowhere without any cost.

eBooks: I hate reading from the screen. I do, I do it a lot, but I want my book I read PRINTED - as vacation for my eyes. I don't want my next read advertised on myspace or pressed on me on Amazon. I will choose my next book from a book shelf, want to see the cover, see the size, flip some pages.

My twopence worth.

Re: Self Publishing

Prince, would you ever reject a manuscript or do you publish anything that is accompanied by $800? My problem with pay-to-publish books is that in my opinion if any manuscript can be published then all books all diminished..

A company that I am familiar with has had a very good reputation with self-publishing services, authors seem to have been impressed by the professionalism as well as the quality of services offered. I have met the guys at BRIOprint and there couldn't be better people in the industry as far as I'm concerned. If you are interested in contacting them, they pretty much do all the services you need to publish.

It is certainly true that self-publishing isn\\\\\\\'t for everyone. As with everything in life, there are pro\\\\\\\'s and con\\\\\\\'s when deciding to write, print, market and distribute your title(s) independently. Some will be more successful that others. Regardless of which direction an author chooses, the first thing to focus on is researching several options and choosing a company or service that they feel comfortable with and can cater to their individual needs.

We attend the major trade shows in NY, London, and Germany with our authors, and we are on top of all social media and traditional marketing techniques to spread the word about their work". Our exhibit at the Book Expo in NY was a resounding success! We had a double booth and numerous authors attended with us. Theres an online bookstore that caters to self publishing www.selfpublishedbookstore.com . Its new but its non profit so they don't charge authors commission fees. Much cheaper than trying to sell on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.
