Is there a book in me?
By Karl Childress

Porn stars and ex-strippers. A hippie with dogs. I know taxmen, ex-preachers, a Frenchman who blogs.

I’ve seen several countries. I’ve eaten good stew. I’ve slept in great places, and not so great too.

I’ve written and drawn and spoiled canvases, three.
I have just one question: Is there a book in me?

I want to write right. Write just what I know. Right wrongs. Write of riches. Write sorrows. Write woes.

It’s said to imagine. Practice hard to create. Work every day. Overfill my plate. With words, play games. Throw, catch them. Try twisting.
When weary with words try turning to listings.

Read a lot.
Develop a plot.
Through all of my efforts still, book I have not.

I’ll try giving birth. A book baby I’ll bake.
I’ll grow him and nurse him.
How long does that take?

I’ll bake my book baby, bread in my brain oven.
He’ll be sired by semen words
From books in the dozens.

Happy with a bastard
How content I’d be. He’ll grow to adulthood,
A man scripted by me.

Quite possibly I’m dreaming.
These lines come too easy.
They’re jaundiced.
They’re white.
They’re silly, like pee.

Though nothing of substance
Have I been able to create.
I’ll pen a book yet!
Just sit there! You wait!

Well-executed prose has a flowing rhythm to it that's every bit as difficult to achieve as the cadenced rhythm in poetry and song. Try freeing yourself from shake-and-bake rhyming; try creating images using words chosen for their meaning and not for their sound.

(or maybe you're a song writer.)

Thanks, Jayce.

I appreciate your prompt response!

No. I am no song writer.

Be well,
Karl

Overall, I liked it, Karl.

This is the only stanza that sounded awkward to me when I read it aloud:

I’ll bake my book baby, bread in my brain oven.
He’ll be sired by semen words
From books in the dozens.

Something about the rhythm/beat maybe? Or am I just looking at it from a piano player's point of view?

They're silly, like pee. Yeah, pee can be pretty silly, all right. Especially after a meal with asparagus. Wow, does it ever act silly then ! :-)

Kitty, thank you!

I appreciate you taking the time to read my work and give me feedback. It is valuable to me. I am in the process of learning and will take any advise/criticism I can get. Even if I go no further than writing for my own enjoyment I can only improve from the input of others.

Be well. Stay well.

Karl

What do you think?

That's the only question worth asking.

Writing a book is not a sprint; it's a marathon (if you will forgive the metaphor). It is only what you believe that will sustain you.

Am I the only one seeing visions of Dr. Seuss?
