Is it typical for publishers to charge you to edit your work

Author: Maureen LoBue (---.dsl.sndg02.sbcglobal.net)

I am in the process of the agent/publisher search. One publisher has done an initial review of the book and requested that I now get it professionally edited as the next step. They offered to connect me with editors they are in partnership with for a cost of $2/word. Is this typical? I was under the impression that part of the role of a publisher was to provide editing.

It is NOT typical. I doubt they've ever read your work. Don't sign anything and RUN AWAY. Sounds like Robert Fletcher's at it again.

No, it's not typical. Sounds like a front for an editing service.

What books in stores does this publisher have?

It appears that you've already published something through BookSurge. Is this the same work you're seeking to place with a commercial publisher? If so, your chances of success there are pretty much nil, no matter what you might pay a so-called agent or editor.

Sorry to bear bad tidings. Good luck to you.

As the old joke goes, it's nice work if you can get it.

Geez Nancy, two bucks a word ain't bad, especially at the discounted rate that the publisher can get due to the 'partnership'. Depending on the length of this book, that's probably less than a thousand dollars - not bad, really.

Professional editing is expensive, Maureen. It has also become more of an independent function. But if your publisher says they're going to 'hook you up' with a editor for a discounted price, you're most likely about to get screwed, royally.

Take heed, you've received good advice here... I'd walk away from this one, if I were you.

Good luck,
d.

Maureen,

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Find another publisher, one that's legit. Go here to check out the scams:
