A Unique Kind of Author

Hi, new member here! I am completely devoted to my writing and kind of "need" to write in some ways, which I\'m sure many can understand here. I hope to become a published author one day, I have a novel in the works of I think an intriguing story and well written (my friends and family have often praises about my writings) and, I am deaf. Not hard of hearing, but probably several steps away from total deafness. Despite this, I manage to write without much or any affected grammar, and i can tell you for those who don't know, many, many deaf people (and hard of hearing as well) struggle to write as fluently as hearing people can. I don't mean it as an insult or anything, but I have been in deaf schools, they often have a problem because being raised with ASL (American Sign Language), which has different grammar structure, so often the sentences lack even basic grammar. Fortunately, I was raised to speak, with the help of hearing aids, and did not learn ASL (against people\'s advice, even) until much later in life. There's no doubt this had a tremendous effect on my writing. And, on top of that, I'm able to write in auditory descriptions without much trouble at all; i can hear some with the aids, after all. Technology has come a long ways in the past ten years. But does this sound like something people would take heed to as to "grab their attention" so to speak? It's especially difficult to do that in this day and age. The story itself is developing at an amazing pace; and well written, perhaps maybe too formal. I can't help but think the plot is a bit obvious, but perhaps being the author of the story brings that to mind. No matter even so; I'm already working on several books at the same time. I'm quite the creative mind, apparently. Sorry for the super long post- and thank you for reading this and if you should respond! I\'m very interested in hearing other's people's opinions, because without that, how do we grow as a writer, right? Peace!

Hi Naomi and welcome.

I know a young deaf woman who is carving out something of a career as a writer (non-fiction).

Editors and publishers and readers don't care if you're deaf, blind or have onions growing out of your ears - as long as you can write an engaging story.

Good luck. (And don't be afraid to break your posts up into paragraphs - makes for easier reading.)

Thank you for your response!!- and apologizes about the paragraphs haha; I'm not too good with writing in forms for message boards. (Do you have to put in the html codes? Now I know! Thanks again.)

And that's good to know editors don't care about such things; I was thinking more along the lines of advertising the book, actually (sorry if I didn't make that clear.) It's definitely thinking ahead, but how you advertise the book makes a huge difference how it sells sometimes; or a backstory to the author. Reading The World According to Garp opened my minds to this- I recommend it for any writers!
