Posting on a Blog

I just read a post on the Wylie-Merrick Agency blog about posting your writing on a blog, and how damaging it can be, since it's technically publishing your work, and that may turn editors off if you've been "published" and your work has been made public already.

I wanted to get some opinions on this. I posted some dialogue from my WIP on my blog, to use in an example, but it's only the dialogue - no narrative. Would this be considered published? It's technically not from my novel, since it doesn't include everything that I wrote, but I'm thinking about removing any posts that have lines from my work, just in case.

Thoughts?

I have no idea. My thoughts on blogs are that you spend valuable time writing stuff for free that you should be spending writing stuff trying to sell.

I disagree. Sometimes you just need to write for pleasure and many authors manage to both blog and sell successfully.

I am in the process of developing a blog and am thinking of inserting a novel, serial fashion, that I have been unable to sell. I am at the point that either I do this to have it read at all, or I resign myself to taking it with me to the grave, and what's the point in that if I think it is a good story that someone may enjoy reading.

Jena, I understand that many writers enjoy the recreational aspects of writing. I was thinking of the many blogs I see that are so detailed and frequently updated that you know the writers spend hours upon hours assembling, composing, and posting it. Me, I got a family and a day job. No can blog all day. :)

You know what, though? As a non-fiction and textbook author, I'm glad they do it. I can't tell you how much great stuff I've grabbed from other people's blogs and websites. Great ideas, info I didn't know about, and I use stuff like their sketches, worksheets or drawings as a base to make changes to and use to my own $$$ benefit.

So hey, bloggers, blog away.

I belong to LiveJournal (which has a great community of writers) and I blog (read other blogs) almost every day. True, this takes time so I have to limit myself--but I've learned so much and I've met some wonderful writers, both published and unpublished. I also work full-time, have a family, and I'm finishing up a third novel (the first 2 are published). Sometimes ya just gotta let your hair down or you'll be bouncing off the walls! :)

Jena,

Can you give us that site? The one for the Live Journal?
Thanks for your input.

Jena, a minor but significant correction. I think what Elena brought up was the penchant some beginners have for posting the pieces they're trying to sell on open-access websites.

But, yes, I think that hopeful writers should take out their modems & wireless cards, & smack them heartily with large hammers, & then get back to doing productive writing. A few years ago, I made a joke about a noob who spent 4-6 hours/day blogging & journaling & foruming about how he didn't have time to write!!

...& now it's all too common a truism.

Actually, I was responding to LC's post at the time.

But yeah, I agree, Anthony. Most people are not fortunate enough to have the entire day to themselves with little or no other responsibilities. Time is precious, and if all you're doing is spending hours blogging about writing...and not actually writing, lol--there's definitely a problem there. :)

I occasionally post "teasers" of my WIPs, but I would never post a lengthy excerpt, let alone an entire work.
