Publishing/Publishers your one stop shop guide

Now I publish books and I am tired of the misunderstanding of the the publishing world by writers.

A - there are two types of publishers on the main that will publish your work. Independant and/or The Big Guys.

If you are a new author the chances of you being published by one of the Big Guys without having your book published by one of the indpendants first is almost NIL.

It is the Independant publishing houses LIKE MINE that will publish your work first. once you have been published depending on sales of the book will be whether or not your book gets headhunted by The Big Guys. Very often a 10 000 selling book over 6 months ( A brilliant result for the indpendant) will get hunted by one of the Big Guys.

The Independants never used to be able to keep up with the print demand ... IE a small indpendant could not afford to run 1 million pre paid paperbacks because they couldnt afford the charge of the printing which is always paid BEFORE the books sell - and thus they couldnt never stock up the shelves of the retaailers. - paperbacks you order pay and then the books are delivered. (POD in this day and age is a joke - with most POD the customer will have to wait 2-3 weeks before the book gets printed then extra wait for the deleivery. If you are thinking of self publishing by POD FORGET IT. You must only self publish if you are going to distribute the BOOKS yourself. Buy 1000 make a website and work like crazy to sell that 1000 the money on which you will be able to keep yourself as you would have already paid the printer before you get the 1000 books. (Look at the books on Amazon and where it says the book will be 2-3 weeks etc etc these books are POD - NO ONE is going to wait three weeks for a unknown authors work unless perhaaps its Grandma. )

With the E Book market however it is NOW for the first time possible for the smaller indpendants to make real money and also the authors to make real money.

It is a new world in regards to publishing for the Independants but dont think that the Big Guys are not still able to throw massive amounts of money at specific authors or titles.

they will continue to make the super stars .. the cost in regards to a promotion agent is astronomical and only still at this time can the major publishing companies afford to hire the powerful promotion companies in regards to multi million sales and authorial super star status.

You are more likley as an author to win the lottery 5 times on the run than to become the next super star JK Rowling or the likes. They are phenomenas they are created Im not saying their product is bad but they are in the right place at the right time (some would say this is indeed a major part of the authorial job - I would agree in essence in part and in theory. But you are better off just writing a book and leaving that to the INDEPENDANTS - for it us that determines these factors NOT the big guys. They go on sales. So a book sells alot with an independant that determines the Big Guys decision on the surrent market trend. It is the Independant that sees the potential of the story in regards to the market. We are the brains they are the BRAWN ... ! )

So in regards to asking about publishing wanting which way to go etc etc .... FORGET about the BIG GUYS until they come to you.

Many Regards
Julien

I'll say. But, for the sake of newbies reading this ...

If you are a new author the chances of you being published by one of the Big Guys without having your book published by one of the indpendants first is almost NIL.

Absolutely not true. My publisher published dozens of first-time novelists, minimum, last year. And my publisher is one of the biggest Big Guys out there. Random House. I know enough authors at other Big Guy publishers to be able to say with confidence that they all publish first-time authors.

Plus, major publishers don't troll the lists of smaller or "independent" publishers looking for titles and authors they can steal.

Again, not true. Whether Big Guy publishers sign authors who have first published with smaller houses is immaterial; that is simply not a reliable route to being "picked up" or "hunted" by the Big Guys.

They buy new authors all the time.

Period.

I'd also be cautious, as a new writer, about working with any company that uses negative campaigns against other publishers as their primary selling point, and has a difficult time with spelling, capitalization, punctuation and composition in a simple forum post. Is that what you want for your book?

Just sayin...

Ce Ce and Cathy C,

Y'all are doing a fine job of exposing this organism to aspiring writers who may stumble into this site.

Finnley and others are doing the same good work on one of Jules' threads just a ways down on this page.

I got to git. Herself is cookin' up a real nice bowl of mastodon entrails with just a hint of cilantro.

Nothing like an "independant" publisher who can't even spell the word INDEPENDENT.

I am a new author, and I am now very confused. Should I be afraid?
