I am looking for an agent for self help book

Author: Lorna Speid (---.san.res.rr.com)

I have completed a book on clinical trials aimed at those who take part in clinical trials. I am looking for an agent with connections to get the book published. This person needs to be willing to communicate via email, and other electronic means, to save time in the process. I am looking for an agent with connections which will allow them to pick up the telephone and make the right referrals and introductions for this book. If you have any ideas on this, or can recommend an agent that might know someone, please let me know.

Lorna,

Please check this link; there's another discussion in the Literary Agent section of writers.net where you'll find many helping hands:

Hey Lorna,

It looks like you have very good credentials to write this book, but I’m getting the feeling you lack some experience with book publishing and agents.

Just about all agents work via email or snail mail so your location means little. The only thing that might come in to play is your ability to promote your book in person, but if you have a strong web following this may not be an issue.

For nonfiction it is your book’s proposal (not the book) that will sell an agent on the merits of your project as well as ultimately pique the interest of a publisher. And while an agent will have the connections to get your book published he/she will not write a proposal for you.

There are many books about creating a great proposal, including my favorite Jeff Herman’s Write the Perfect Book Proposal: 10 Proposals That Sold And Why.

Once you have an exciting proposal start querying agents that take your sort of material.

In the future, always query nonfiction first because you might find your project was not as saleable as you thought, and you won’t waste time writing something that can’t be sold.

You kind of went backwards by writing the book first. In your case it would be best to write the proposal next because you’ll want it to be perfect and ready to send while your name is fresh on the agent’s mind.

And remember never to pay someone to do all of this for you. If they offer to write a proposal and edit your book for a fee before processing then they are surely con artist. And do check the crook sites in the links provided by Beautiful Loser.

Break a pencil (luck for writers)

Good advice, Sangay. The Herman book is excellent. Agents just love good proposals. Different publishers require different "ingredients" in their proposals, so have all of them prepared in advance. A large number of moderate-sized publishers accept proposals without an agent. Most of the university publishers do, too.

Thanks DC!

I think all of the Herman books have great info, and I’m not just saying that because he’s such a cool guy who taught me so much about the biz.

And Lorna,

Just so you know, I got Jeff Herman to play 20 questions at Helium.com this month. So if you want to stop by and lurk, ask questions or say hello (but not pitch) here’s the url of the rules and time.

Helium is free to join if you want to drop a note.

Peace Out,

Sangay Glass
