Rejection Letter |

Andrea Somberg requested the first five pages of my MS (which was to me, odd, only the first 5). Anywho, after a while she sent me this.
Dear Jay:
Thanks for sending along the opening pages of The Angelic Heritage. Truth be told, though, I'm afraid they didn't draw me in as much as I had hoped. I'm pressed for time these days and, what with my reservations about the project, I suspect I wouldn't be the best fit. Thanks so much for contacting me, though, and for giving me this opportunity. It's much appreciated, and I'm sorry to be passing. I wish you the very best of luck in your search for representation.
Best,
Andrea
I wish she could be a little more specific. Was it bad writing? What exactly was it? I dunno, kinda depressing, but I'm moving on. Anywho, thoughts?

This is a lot more than you're going to get in most rejection letters. And yet, I know it's nothing helpful to a writer.
Most agents don't have time to give you writing pointers. They just say they didn't "fall in love" with it, and adios.
Fagedaboutit, Jay. Just go forward.

Dear Keith:
Thanks for sending along the opening pages of INTO THE ZONE. Truth be told, though, I'm afraid they didn't draw me in as much as I had hoped. I'm pressed for time these days and, what with my reservations about the project, I suspect I wouldn't be the best fit. Thanks so much for contacting me, though, and for giving me this opportunity. Best,
Andrea
Form letter, Hoss. Just means she's passing so don't read anything into it. Stick with it.

Many, many agents believe they can judge your writing chops within the opening five pages of your manuscript. Noah Lukeman (an agent) has a book called (what else?) "The First FIve Pages", in which he tries to tell you what they look for. You might want to invest a copy.
As to what's been said, I agree. A no is a no. Move on.
Good luck.

Can I assume from the form rejections, that at least both of you produced good queries?

I got the same rejection letter about two weeks ago. I guess I'm part of the Andrea Somberg form rejection letter club now. Hip Hip Hooray!

I got the exact same letter from her. Just fill in the blank with the title of your ms.

Well I feel a lot better knowing it really was nothing more than a form letter.
It's just one more no, closer to my yes. :-)

They are form letters probably sent by an intern. The same one to everyone just the title is different.

AAHHH, this reminds me of all the rejection letters I got when I tried to become a syndicated cartoonist...
Chin up Jay, there are a lot more literary agents than there are cartoon syndicates.
I can hardly wait!

What did they do in the old days before Mail Merge technology?

They would photocopied the letter, fill your name in the blanks, tie it to a rock and hurl it through your window late at night.
> the Andrea Somberg form rejection letter club
Damn if that doesn't have the ring of a book title.
And I'm pretty sure she would probably reject that one too. :^)

I wonder if she ever requested a full from an unsoliciated manuscript. I bet you can count them on one hand if she ever did.

Andrea has a stellar reputation. Nice lady, too. But yeah, she can afford to be choosy.
