toward or towards??

Author: Matt Austin (---.dynamic.mts.net)

I'm being driven crazy by this simple little thing!!

He ran toward them...
He ran towards them...

She's putting her money toward it...
She's putting her money towards it...

Which way is right?

I'd put that in the same category as anyway vs. anyways. It's amazing how often I hear "anyways."

"So anyways, what I did was....."

Ick.

Hey now! I say anyways.

Anyways, I'd say to use 'toward'.

Actually, "towards" isn't wrong but "toward" is the preferred use nowadayS. If you read books from the fifties and earlier, you'll find "towards" used exclusively. Matt, perhaps you were confused because you have been reading too much "old stuff."

I, too, get annoyed with the use of "anyways." I don't have respect for people who use this word. Such folks are only marginally better than sex-abusers and con artists robbing little old ladies of their savings.

Oh, oops, just see that leroy is one of them. Well now, hmmm, uh ... well... uh... Darn, why can't this site have an edit button :)

Dang Nom, I feel so... little.

Anyways, gotta go - just saw a little old lady leaving the ATM.

And after he takes her two hundred dollars, he'll rape her. In the bushes behind the bank branch out of the range of the surveillance camera. To add insult to injury (but very much in character), he keeps using "anyways."

Can this man be rehabilitated? Methinks not.

Geez... how cruel. You're ruthless, Nom. Rehabilitation would be tough, rest assured you wouldn't have the fortitude to do it.

Anyways, you must be watching a different old lady or staking out a different bank, cause I ain't seein' no bushes.

Hmmmm... Nom, how could I re-write that correctly?

Well, it depends. If you're British, then towards is acceptable usage. If you're American, it's toward.

(correction: out of the surveillance camera's range)

Leroy,
I saw a guy with a red toupee and a black Rasputin beard (obviously false) emerging from the bushes near the ATM. His jeans showed a big stain around the crotch and his fly still stood open. He ran away from the bank faster than Donovan Bailey and yelled, "Anyways, I’m proud of my deed!"

Are you claiming you're not this man?

It't okay, Leroy. Even though you're hopeless case, i like you anywaY. (yeah, i'm such a softy.) ;)

Pardon the typos: It's okay, Leroy. Even though you're a hopeless case ...

The loud sirens of three cruisers from the Grammar Polizei distracted me. Sorry, i can't post anymore. I want to stay at the window and watch this interesting development.

Yep, that's what I'm claiming, that ain't me. However, that description fits some kin I've got out in Tennessee. You ain't in Tennessee are ya?

Okay... I'm conceding, Nom, but it's been fun (even a tad disturbing at times). We've hijacked Matt's thread long enough.

And for Matt's benefit... I obviously don't always adhere to grammar best-practices when posting. For the record, "anyway" is correct and "toward" is preferrable.

I'm outta this one.

This is late, but it's rather better than never. Point is, towards is what I use because I'm from the UK. And please, if you're not British, DON'T try to spell our way, and then only use selective words... (e.g. "practise" the verb form--"I'm practising" versus "pratice" the noun form--as in "I am off to practice, mum.") :) Haven't got a problem with it per se, though.
Toward is the common American spelling.

:) Lyra
