I Received This Rejection Today

Author: Keith . (---.dhcp.spbg.sc.charter.com)
Date:   08-06-08 09:49

From one of the most successful childrens agents in the biz.

Dear Keith: thanks for your query. I'm afraid I'll need to pass on this as I have a client who right sthis sort of fiction, and so you'd be better off with another, more enthusiastic agent. Best of luck to you.

I realize an assistant wrote this and signed the agent's name, but WTF?

That's so funny, Keith. You should frame it.

At least they had the decency to respond, Keith. Let's not forget that. I've had several who didn't even extend that simple courtesy, regardless of whether they could spell.

Keith:

Take the rejection letter, and tape it to your wall, it will probably be the beginning of many more to come, so why not wallpaper one of your walls with a design that you know one day will be replaced by twice as many acceptance letters, and then you will have a new wallpaper design to display...

I'm director of two writing groups, and I tell my members that rejection is part of the game, but once you get that one acceptance all the rejections along the way was worth the effort of not giving up your dream....

Thank you, Margaret. This wasn't my first rejection, but it was the first to cross up "right" and "write".

From what I can tell, leroy, less than 10% of all agents out there bother with rejections. In their eyes, no answer is the same, and takes less time. Of course, they'd be very angry if anybody treated them the same way, but that, of course, is different.

I have received many much worst than this. I'll have to see if I can make a list of them.
Perhaps, it is because of cases like this that they use form letter for rejections.

Here is one I received last week.

Thanks you for your interest in by agency but I've got so much on my plate that I can't offer to take a loser look at your work

I'd put the incident in one of my novels. 'Frustrated writer seeks vengeance against illiteracy in the writing world.' LOL

Hey Joe... sometimes the response rates are pretty dismal. However, my experience hasn't been that bad. I'd say about 20% don't respond. Most will at least shoot a quick note (even if poorly-written).

Once I had an agent send me TWO rejections to the same query.

I received responses to my queries about 80-90% of the time. Only a handful didn't bother to reply.

Hold on. Maybe it was intentional and not a misspelling.

I mean, what's wrong with your story that needs to be righted so badly? ;^)
