When I shared with a friend that I was researching how to get published and would soon begin sending out letters, she asked me what stops the agents or anyone else from stealing my book or ideas. She said I should get it copyrighted first.
Is this true?

Go to the "Published Writers" forum.
On 7/24 there's a thread called "Copyright Quagmire."
We debated this subject at length, and the various opinions should be of help to you.

According to the Copyright Act of 1976, a work is copyrighted at its creation and so is automatically copyright protected. If someone steals your work, you can take them to court even if you have not officially applied for copyright protection. Also, it's a waste of money to copyright a manuscript before publication as most books are changed many times before they finally see print in book form.
When you apply for copyright, a copy of the manuscript under consideration must be sent with your application, so if there are changes, and there will be, the final book won't be the same book as the one registered for copyright. So, by this, you can see that applying early on would be something you'd not want to do. Hope this helps.

Why would a legitimate literary agent steal your book?

Or an illegitmate one, for that matter. There's no pay-off in stealing somebody's incomplete manuscript.
But just so you know--you can't copyright ideas or titles.

If you go to Writer Beware's blog and search on "copyright," two articles titled "copyright 101" will come up. They give a pretty good overall summary of the subject.
The URL is http://www.accrispin.blogspot.com/

We also have some information on the subject that is Heather's concern at www.wyliemerrick.blogspot.com. When on the blog, look at the right side and click on "copyright." There are four posts listed there with a variety of information included.
Also, don't forget to check out http://www.copyright.gov/, which is the first place you should go to get some copyright basics. Everything else is just interpretation. Sometimes the best place to start is at the source.:)
