List of Major Literary Agents

Author: Lance Ng (220.255.7.---)
Date:   07-30-08 01:23

Hi all,

we have painstakingly created a list of major literary agents for aspiring writers. This list is filtered from regular participants in Frankfurt Book Fair (the largest convention in the book industry; everyone who\'s anyone in publishing will be there every year)

The list is linked to the agents\' websites which have been individually vetted to ensure they are genuine, good ol\' traditional agents (no reading fees, editing services etc.) Some of them have been around for decades and represent many big name authors.

If you are submitting, study each agents\' submission policy carefully on their website. Genuine lit agents have their own specific guidelines and junk your submission straight away if you don\'t follow it diligently.

Went to your site. Saw "How to" questions/answers on the left side of the page. Saw this:

How to write a book?
How to write a fiction novel?
How to write non-fiction?

Moved on.

Oh, and I made this link just for you.

I didn't see any stinkers on that list, but a lot of really top agencies weren't on it.

I don't know how "brutal" it is to point out a publishing company using the term Fiction Novel. I found Writers Net as a clueless noob and am still grateful for those who steered me away from ...less than upstanding companies.

I thought Lance's advice on several threads was dead-on and am not sugesting his company is one of the above mentioned. However, I also think one should throughly investigate a publisher who doesn't recognize the redundancy of using the term "fiction novel" before going into business with them. My opinion. Peace.

Actually a list already exists of throughly tested and vetted agents. The list is posted and maintained at www.aar-online.org. All agents listed here are top agents with guaranteed sales, otherwise they would not be in this database. So why is another list needed or is this a rhetorical question?

There are also excellent agents who are not yet members of AAR. The most important thing is to research, research, research before you send anything out. Period.

Any help is great help! So I think any list is a great help!

Jena's right. There are good agents who not members of AAR. For instance, I didn't see Abigail Koons' name on there, or Ann Boyle's, just to name a few. At least I didn't see them.

I do agree though, the AAR website is an excellent place to research. So is agentquery.com and several other places, including books such as writers' market and Jeff Herman's agents and publishers guide.

I'm not disagreeing with you, Robert, only pointing out that AAR is not the only source.

Also, Lance, Keith has a valid point. I'd get that little mishap fixed - writers have a tendency to be so damn picky about things being written right. It's the little things that kill credibility. However, much appreciation for your efforts.

I don't want to run this into the ground, but it's not just being picky. Using "Fiction Novel" is rather famous (or infamous) for the mark of an amateur. Miss Snark stomped her high heels into a tizzy over the term and several other prominent agents and editors have blogged about it. Many consider it a red flag the size of Texas and can't get past it to take a query seriously.

I have trouble believing a publisher would not recognize the fact that a novel is inherently fiction. That's what it is. It's like describing a kitty as a feline cat. This is common knowledge in the business and, well, I'll shut up now. 'Night.

Please excuse the other post as the @#+&^ thing timed out, as usual. But I did copy this before posting but reposted it in under the wrong heading-sorry!! First time I've done that. Wow.

Separation of good from bad would be so easy if everything were as simple as using "fiction novel" instead of just "novel" to make decisions as to whether to consider an author's book for publication or not. Maybe some publishers are that picky, but I can assure you most aren't.

Yes, I agree that there are good agents that aren't AAR members. However, when you use the AAR database to find an agent, you are assured that agents listed there at least have legitimate sales or they wouldn't be members. Plus with the AAR, authors at least have the protection of a Code of Ethics. There's little regulation out there but this organization does gives writers some protection against abuse, whereas with other methods for picking an agent, you have nothing but an agent's word that they're honest.

I also agree with Jena. Never stop doing research, not only on agents but about publishing in general. Knowledge is power.

Just to throw an orc in the cream cheese, I'd like to point out that Truman Capote always called In Cold Blood a non-fiction novel.

well I can see why he'd do that. Granted it's based on a true story, he did pad it up a bit.

Wouldn't cream cheese kill orcs? or do orcs kill cream cheese?
