Possible Best Seller and Need a Publicist |

Wow- wouldn't that be cool if I was right and I do have a best seller? I may actually have a chance-- by some stroke of luck. Now I am asking for some guidance in finding a publicist. Does anyone have any recommendations or know where I should start? Or if I should? My book is doing well on Amazon and I want to work fast while the excitement is still going. Here is where I am right now...do you think it is enough to justify hiring a publicist? Any advice appreciated:
(as posted to my blog http://kaybratt.blogspot.com/)
Just wanted to check in and say thank you again to my many friends and supporters! Out of over a million books on Amazon, my ranking got to #413 today!! Out of over a million-- that is amazing. I am so humbled that people really want to read my book. Also, the following has happened in the last two weeks:
An editor of a Chinese adoption magazine has asked me to submit an article about my book-- and their circulation is close to 1500 families.
A editor of a local magazine is reviewing sample chapters to possibly include in their next issue.
A man that owns a very high traffic website put my book on his blog-- causing a huge jump in sales.
An adoption forum about China has written about my book, stirring up even more sales.
As a side note--this is not about money. It is and always has been about raising awareness.

You should try and get yourself an agent at this stage to sell the rights to a big publishing house Kay!

I agree with Lance. Publicists cost thousands of dollars, and until you see the money start coming in by the fistful, you should put a hold on the idea of a publicist.
However, your impressive ranking on Amazon and the attention you're getting will most probably grab the attention of a top agent in an email. He /she can certainnly help you seize the moment without you having to spend so much money.
Congratulations on your success thus far: as a fellow self-published author, I can tell you that you are one of the success stories already.

Kay, did you see your latest review on Amazon (July 25th) - there is someone wanting to contact you. You see, the fan mail is going to start rolling in if it hasn't already:)

Kay,
The ideal time for hiring a publicist is 6 to 12 months before your book becomes available for sale.
I've just started looking for help in this area myself ... My novel is in the sending out requested partials stage.
I think querying agents is a great idea but if you receive a decent advance, it's still a good idea to hire your own publicist. The major publishers nowadays only give token support. You can spend as much or as little on your own publicist as you desire/can afford.
Some books to give you a crash education:
1. JUMP START YOUR BOOK SALES: A Money-Making Guide for Authors, Independent Publishers & Small Presses - by Marilyn & Tom Ross. (Published 1999) http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Jump+Start+Your+Book+Sales
I've just started reading this one.
2. BUZZ YOUR BOOK - by M. J. Rose & Douglas Clegg. (Published 2001). Available as e-book only.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Buzz+Your+Book
M. J., who I met on a message board, used her background in marketing to publish her first novel as an e-novel and did so well that it was picked up by of the Big 5 publishers. She's got at least 4 novels out now.
3. Guerrilla Marketing for Writers: 100 Weapons to Sell Your Work - by Jay Conrad Levinson, Rick Frishman & Michael Larsen. (Published 2000). http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1217466547/ref=a9_sc_1?ie=UTF8&search-alias=stripbooks&field-keywords=guerrilla%20marketing
Congrats on your book sales & good luck with your publicity!
Best,
Janice
