testing testing 1 2 3

Just seeing if this site works. I've logged in and tried editing my profile 3 times, but when I click update it tells me to log in again...very annoying. Can anyone help, I'm a new member.

The site has a very quick timeout, meaning that you've only got (from my experience) seven or eight minutes to update or post things before it times you out.

I tend to type things in Microsoft Word and then post them, editing again if necessary. It's no fun to spend eight or nine minutes crafting a thoughful response, only to lose it because you've timed out. Type it up in Word or some other word processor, copy and paste it to the site, and you don't have that problem. Good luck!

Funny, this site never times out like that for me. I started typing this at 2:30 PM PDT...and posted it, without difficulty or timeout at 2:47 PM.

If you're having timeout problems, it's probably a connectivity issue to take up with your ISP.

You point that out every time this subject comes up, Joe.

Don't know why it doesn't happen to you, but I've been coming here for years, using both Firefox and IE. I have a high-speed connection which has been bulletproof for years.

WN times people out. Perhaps it's a duration of cookie thing or whatever that needs to be upped. But please understand it does happen to lots of folks. Glad it doesn't happen for you.

No, Keith, I walked away and did something else for a while to make the point.

As I've also mentioned, Finnley, I use FireFox. Yes, I've tweaked it, but WN never timed me out even before I started tweaking. And, I might add, this was true when I used Win98 and is still true on Linux. I don't think it's anything I've done, except, possibly, kept my computer clear of adware, malware and other things that might slow it down. (Not that I'm saying anybody's box is infected, just that I know mine isn't.)

I was just kidding.

Not that I'm saying anybody's box is infected, just that I know mine isn't

Yeah, they all say that. Practice safe.

(Sorry. Had to log back in again to respond. I got . . . timed out.)

That's very interesting and wonderful for you. Doesn't change the fact that anecdotally, I'd say it happens to more folks than not. Who knows why? But I don't have this problem anywhere else. My experience is that WN is the most common variable, and not any equipment or ISP I've ever used to access it.

But, in six months or a years time, or whenever the next time this subject is broached, I fully expect you to tell us that you don't have that problem and it's probably their ISP.

It'll be like Groundhog Day.

Just out of curiosity, Finnley, do you click the "Save my password" box when you log in? I've found that if I do that, it doesn't time me out for ten to fifteen minutes, and only at all if I'm posting. If I'm just reading, I never get timed out.

But when I wasn't saving the password, I'd get kicked out every few minutes. Don't know what difference it should make, but it did on my computer.

Cathy, that just might be it! I always do that on sites so that I don't have to bother with logging in. Never occurred to me that that might be it. Thanx!

Keith, I know my machine's clean for a very good reason: all those malware, spyware and trojan (oh my!) programs out there are designed to infect Windows machines. I use Linux, and they just don't work. Maybe some day, there will be threats to Linux out there, but for the moment, I'm safe because I don't do Windows.

Finnley, I wasn't bragging, and I wasn't saying that those of you who keep getting logged out are using infected machines. All I know is a) my box is clean and b) I don't get logged out. Of course, correlation does not equal causation, but there was always that possibility.

Your use of the word "Trojan" relates to my attempt at humor. I wasn't talking about your computer box. I'll stop now.

Heh.

Never mind.
