This is not a joke.
One of the great things about the internet is that you can put someone's name into a search engine, and their state of residence, and come up with some interesting results.
If you are unsure, for example, about someone's bona-fides - an agent's for instance - or even a new poster at WN - you can Google.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the page the search throws up corresponds to the person you're checking on, but then again - sometimes you just know.
Sometimes, if the google result shows a PDF doc, and you can't read that doc, you can hit 'view as HTML' and read the file.
It's a great help if you find yourself a suspicious of something...
I'm sorry I can't be any more specific than that.

You can also put in name of a town into a google search along with the State to get a more accurate return.

You can also ask a lot of useful questions about things like, say, manuscript format, query letters, how to get an agent, copyright, etc., and be rewarded with useful information.
BEFORE you start posing the same repetitive questions here.

Charlie
I just googled Vicky Scott and found that someone by the same name is a porn star! ;-)
Could choosing that sign-in name be something of a Freudian slip on my part? A subconscious wish to be ... WILD? Heaven knows it sounded ordinary enough.
Good idea though,if you google certain names that are associated here with invective (not mine, not mine ;-) you will find them being just as obnoxious on other message boards. So this is obviously how they vent their spleen and get their jollies.
Cheers

Well, hell. I've read this post three times, and I still don't get who we are supposed to be talking about! Never have been good at playing I Spy. I did google vicky scott and got the porn star thing, but surely if she were really a porn star, she wouldn't have used her real name on here! Maybe she did it as a joke in case somebody did google her name, Vicky's pretty sly that way, aren't you Vicky?
So, could somebody either tell me, or email mail my dumbass and fill me in if it's somebody else? I simply must know!

new poster at WN - you can Google.
Yes you can type in Rose DesRochers and you will pull up a post of flame wars by a bunch of troll dolls from a forum where they would like to think they are a writing community. I suggest if you do that you read every post on abctales. Maybe perhaps you are talking of my stalker and my reports on rip off report.com. If you are refering to that oh yes do read all that and then go to todays-woman and read the harassing emails from him and the edited photos his wife did of me.
Either way one can not always believe what they read in Google. Google can be as bad as the enquirer. Google can be a wonderful tool or a hurtful tool. I say the best way to find out about a company or a person look at all sides of the situation not just the negative.
You can also search Todays-Woman
Anyway this is a sad topic Charlie.
I'm not sure if I should be insulted or thankful I found out what writers.net was about before investing time here.

ByteAudio Bob here - I'll tell you, Google is NO friend of mine! It certainly has exposed me for the scammer that I am. All you have to do is type my name and byteaudio into the search engine and hoo-boy, the stuff you'll find out about me and my antics in Florida, Washington state and Alabama. My revenues have dropped considerably since I was linked with the byteaudio scam, and the BBB is all over my ass - I think Google sucks!

I may not get this. Is this site about writing or personal destruction? It seems like it's populated with hyenas just waiting for someone to post their work, only to be attacked by a pack of hyena's. I like to look at message boards with a writers theme. Like most people I have an interest how books get published and movies get made.
I've noticed that writers forums tend to be extraordinarily vicious.
I notice writers tend to complain often about their inability to get their work looked at. I'm beginning to understand why. You mean to tell me that you do an internet investigation on people who post a message and do a public lynching?
you seem to be easily offended by something someone posts, but you are okay with you own filthy, obnoxious comments. If I were an agent or a publisher, I would probably do an internet investigation on you to see if you were the type of person I wanted to work with. I've found very few around here. Grow up!

People who spend a lot of time on message boards, Scott, are generally lonely, bored and frustrated. In other words, they are not well-balanced, happy campers. This is a cheap way to vent their spleen.

Scott, or Donald, as the case may be, since your incoming info just happens to be exactly the same as Donald Fenton's, don't you think the court would frown on the behavior you are displaying here? You know that we know what the deal is, so there's no sense in beating around the bush about it. Maybe you should reconsider your rash and vindictive statements made to a group of writers you just met and pull the reigns in on your anger. I'm sure you don't want to get in anymore trouble. I haven't said a word yet about your memorial, and I actually thought the concept was honorable, but your irrational posts here, which led to this group, which is close and wanted to protect one another from trouble, are making your memorial and all the work you have obviously put into it, far from the focus anymore. You are cutting off your nose to spite your face, I fear.
And, Vicky, not all of us are lonely, bored and frustrated, some people just like to gab. Nothing less, nothing more.

Providing that you don't have your real name listed in a phone directory somewhere, Natalia, I would tend to agree. And whether or not you have something to hide is not the point. The fact is, there are a lot of weirdos around, and I, for one, would not want them to know where I live.

With the advent of the internet, research has never been easier. For what once would have taken considerable effort and expense to find out, can now be accessed with a couple of taps on the keyboard.
And providing the general area in which one lives is known,(especially if it is a small town) then there are all sorts of records that can be checked quite independent of a phone directory.
If anyone here is familiar with the way that skip tracers work, they'll know what I mean.

I would NEVER let anyone on an internet forum know my real name. For even although I have an unlisted telephone number, I KNOW that they could find me. (and my name is not an uncommon one)It's just so pathetically easy.
There are all kinds of psychotic personalities who are drawn to the seeming anonymity of cyberspace. And some have been known to get on planes and hunt down other posters who have offended them.
So the tip of the day is: If they know your real name, or have anyway of tracking you down, you better tread lightly.

It is not paranoid to fear an individual who has already been convicted of making death threats, it's just plain common sense.
However, I was commenting on the general populace of internet chat rooms, and the assorted weirdos they offer, rather than on Mr.Fenton specifically. Who, may merely have the misfortune to carry the same name as the individual mentioned in the court documents.
I dislike the whole concept of trial by internet. Arousing as it does the lynch mob mentality of the more primitive participants.

Don't agree, Vicky. There's not all that much constructive about Web site discussion boards like this other than the passing of reliable, appropriate writing and publishing information, in my opinion--and you can't really have "reliable" and "fake-name adviser whose credentials can't be verified" in the same sentence when you aren't kidding yourself.
